There are many different ways to pitch in, no one in SKIFA is paid and we all do what we enjoy most and best fits our time and skills
COOK + CHOP
Cooking at scale means a lot of chopping, big pans to stir and dishes to taste.
Whether you're cooking for 30 or 200, having a crew to share the prep, cooking, serving and washing up is key.
Signing up to help cook and chop means joining a call-outs chat and volunteering when you can.
You don't have to organise the recipe, logistics or shopping. It's a turn up and help kind of role.
Depending on the scale of the meal, coordinators may ask for help with various tasks before the day.
COORDINATE
This role is all about making a plan and recruiting crew to make it happen
As a coordinator you are responsible for:
Choosing or writing a suitable scaled recipe
Picking the kit needed to cook the recipe and arranging transport
Recruiting helpers and coordinating when and where they are needed to help
Keeping an overview of allergens and hygiene control
Facilitating consensus decision-making in the kitchen with the crew
For each step we have resources and support available, with experienced coordinators available to buddy with new coordinators and members of our core team supporting with recipe writing, kit knowledge, advice and background admin support.
DRIVE
This really is as simple as driving kit, food and people to where they need to be.
For most meals we use our own vehicles, and for very large events we might hire vans.
Once signed up you will be added to a drivers network chat where call-outs will be shared. You can respond when you are available.
STORE KIT
We need storage space across Scotland for our catering kits, stock cupboards and some of our bulkier items.
Getting equipment out to various places in Scotland will decentralise our network further, create resilience and reduce the need to collect kit from central storage locations.
If you have some spare space, this could be a great way for you to help.
We're especially looking for social centres or community spaces with kitchen and venue space.
ADMIN
There are lots of tasks we do in the background to keep our infrastructure and networks running.
For example we write recipes, respond to emails, process requests, book venues, order from suppliers, track where our kit is, maintain our equipment, keep accounts, arrange hire vehicles, produce content for our website and social media.
If you are someone who want's to support but the cooking doesn't suit you then this could be a great way to help.
Because of the sensitivity of some of work, for some parts of our work we require a security vouch. If you don't think there is anyone who could vouch for you, don't let that stop you getting involved.
